[Women's Indoor Track & Field] Falcons Sweep KCAC Weekly Indoor Track & Field Honors

Comments

WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons have made a clean sweep of the KCAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards, with Kortney Schutt winning the top field honor and junior Aileen Gurrola capturing the track nod.

Schutt posted a pair of top five finishes this past weekend at the Northwest Open in Maryville, Mo., including a runner-up showing in the Weight Throw that was a school record throw of 16.70. The result is an NAIA "A" Standard qualifying mark and is currently tops in the KCAC and seventh in the NAIA.

A Haysville, Kan. native, Shutt also competed in the Shot Put and finished fourth with a mark of 12.80.

"Kortney has really found her stride this season in the weight throw," Friends head coach Henry Brun said.

"She has improved by nearly two meters this season and much of it is attributed to her strong work ethic and attitude in daily practices. She has her sights set on making a memorable National Championship experience and I believe she has what it takes to throw her way to a potential All-American performance."

Gurrola was also a force in Maryville, winning the 600 yard run with a time of 1:27.18 that ranks first in the KCAC this season. The mark was .2 seconds from an NAIA "A" Standard qualifying time.

The Garden City, Kan. native also helped the Falcons win the 4 X 800 relay with an NAIA "A" Standard time of 9:30.61 that is tops in the conference and second in the NAIA. Gurrola then contributed to a runner-up finish for Friends in the Distance Medley Relay (12:44.11).

"Aileen is a true worker on the track," Brun said.  "Her versatility in the middle distances has made her a force so far this indoor season and it has been great to see her step up as a leader within her event group."

"Her fearlessness and grit are her strongest attributes, so I am really looking forward to seeing her continue to improve each meet. She will certainly be a staple for our team success at the KCAC level as well as the national meet, with the goal being to come home as a Top five team."

The Falcons are next scheduled to compete at the Bill Butterworth Masters Classic at Wichita State University on Friday (Jan. 31).
